Rainy day riding

My timing today was pretty rubbish as no sooner had I caught and saddled Meg up than the heaven's opened and down came the rain. I am not talking a bit of drizzle either - there was a bonafide cloud burst! But, it settled a bit and 'Sod it' I thought, 'I am out here anyway, so I shall ride!'. And, ride I did :)

I really need some goals but it is hard because I just can't afford to compete at the moment and finding extra cash for lessons or even to put enough diesel in the truck to go places is also very difficult but I really need something to work towards in my riding and with Meg. I also lack a lot of confidence and she lacks a lot of experience so together we're a bit of a potential for disaster but I really want to achieve more with my riding and my horses. I am going to have to start thinking outside the box I think. If anyone has any ideas, sing out!

and some fairly hopeless video

    Hi Louise,

Don't really have any ideas to offer as I'm in much the same boat as you! I enjoy reading your blog because you're an inspiration to me - really liked seeing the vids of you and Meg doing dressage last winter. I've returned to riding after 15+ years off - have a hubby who's keen but green, as is my 10yo daughter (12yo son prefers lego :o) we have a clydie cross with a lovely temperament but who is also inexperienced, and the same goes for horse no 2 who's an anglo, so a bit more to handle but very genuine. We're lucky to have a float (yay!) and have been going out and about for rides close by, and I'm s-l-o-w-l-y gathering the bits and pieces of gear so I can compete once we're ready for it (am scared to try and find riding boots for my extra wide calves though!) Hopefully I may be able to do some dressage over winter (biggest challenge is no flat area on our 6 acres), otherwise maybe sports days next spring - I hope. Anyway, blah blah, really just wanted to say you're not alone and thanks for sharing as I for one appreciate it :o)

  2. What a lovely message! Thank you Marjon!! Sometime I wonder if anyone reads my ramblings because I get so few comments but I see through the online stats that I do get quite a lot of visitors so it is lovely to be told I am an inspiration - thank you! You sound like you are doing really well - I think we just have to keep on keeping on and do what we can when we can and enjoy our lovely horses. I have just today arranged to go for a ride with a friend at the end of the week on a lovely big farm. The change of scenery will be lovely, as will the company :o)

  3. If it wasn't for the Stat counter, I too believed no one was reading my ramblings. although at present they are ramblings and I wouldn't blame anyone for not reading!! I don't do anything competitive with my horses because of a lack of money. So I had to learn to find another way to enjoy them, although there is still a yearning. No your not alone Louise but you are well off compared to people like us. We don't own any land and I doubt we ever will. Enjoy your farm ride, it may lead you on a whole new path.

You're welcome :o) It does take a bit of guts to put your "ramblings' out there for all to see, but for people like me it is nice to see someone you can relate to doing what you're trying to do. Horses are such a luxury - having been on one income (homeschoolers) for more than a decade, and knowing how to s-t-r-e-t-c-h that dollar! It is only since we were lucky enough to get onto our own piece of dirt that the dream has come true. I used to compete when I was in my late teens, and I have to scale back my expectations a bit. But being older I have also realised that I love having the horses around anyway, and the riding is just the icing on the cake.

Hope you enjoy your farm ride (if you can, take some photos! :o) and I also forgot to say in my previous comment that the bit where Meg slips with the expletive made me laugh out loud!

BTW, I don't know my way around blogs at all, but it took three clicks on "post your comment" (and page refreshments) before I got the message "your comment will be visible after approval" - maybe that could be a reason for the lack of comments?
